A huge hello from Mrs Smith and Miss Moss!

Our Early Years Unit is made up of two classes who work closely together. Mrs Smith and Miss Moss are our North and South Bay Class Teachers and Mrs Shortle and Mrs Johnson are the Class Teaching Assistants. Mrs Shortle is a Higher Level Teaching Assistant who leads music and the outdoor classroom. Mrs Johnson is an Advanced Teaching Assistant who leads the sensory opportunities within the EYFS. Phonics and Reading

In the Early Years Unit we follow the Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised programme. The Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised is a complete systematic synthetic phonics programme (SSP) developed for schools by schools. Based on the original Letters and Sounds, but extensively revised to provide a complete teaching programme meeting all the expectations of the National Curriculum, the Ofsted Deep Dive into reading and preparing your children to go beyond the expectations of the Phonics Screening Check.

Reading is very important to us and we read at every opportunity. Children will be introduced to fully decodable books using the Collins Big Cat reading books. Children will use these books in their three reading practice sessions each week and will then have access to these books online for reading at home. Children are tracked closely and we aim for all children to adore reading, read for enjoyment and to read for a purpose.

Children also have access to the library each week to choose a book of their choice to encourage reading for enjoyment at home. We run regular reading information evenings and events throughout the year to find out more.

Maths

We closely follow the White Rose Reception Maths approach provided by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Maths. We use lots of visual representations of numbers and encourage children to develop a deeper level of understanding. We take part in daily planned number sessions and look for opportunities to extend our knowledge during play and exploration too.
